Are certain dog breeds more prone to ACL problems than other dog breeds?

Question: Are certain dog breeds more prone to ACL problems than other dog breeds?

Answer: Yes. There are certain breeds that have a higher chance of having problems in their ACL ligament. The most prevalent dog breeds to develop ACL injuries are Labrador Retrievers, Rottweilers Newfoundland’s, Mastiffs, Pit Bulls and Pit Bull Mixes, although any and every breed can get this injury. The reason for the increased frequency in these breeds is perhaps the percentage of people owning these breeds.

Injuries are the not the only cause of torn ACL’s or other ACL problems. Older dogs that have lost muscle strength in their back ends and dogs that have a different bend at their Stifle (knee joint) can be more prone to develop this injury unfortunately through regular wear and tear.

The most typical traumatic injury that causes an ACL injury is a dog running, that steps in a hole or depression in the ground which stabilizes and internally rotates the lower leg while the upper leg shifts in a non-matching motion.

We sell ACL braces to almost every type of dog there is, but obviously the more popular dogs will show up to us in greater numbers.
